John Shelton Reed won the music award in 1933. John Shelton Reed Jr. who wasn’t born until 1942 continued with the story: Dad was known to embellish his stories a bit, but we were told that he played on DB’s football and basketball teams, while also playing most of the woodwinds, especially the piccolo, for Fess Witt’s DB band. He always told us that he had been the state champion piccolo player. I don’t know about that, but this plaque (which I’d never seen) does prove that he was an award-winning one. The piccolo seems an odd choice for a boy who was 6’4” and 200 pounds.
