John Columbus Cate, IV

September 27, 1942 – August 6, 2024

BRENTWOOD – John Columbus Cate IV died on August 6, at 81, in Brentwood, TN. John was born in Athens, TN, to John C. Cate III and Antoinette Stickley Cate. John is survived by his spouse, Ellen Whitlow Cate; his children, John H. Cate (Stephanie Gilboy) and Elizabeth Cate (Egmont Honer); and his granddaughters, Kealey and Natalie Cate.

John was an alumnus of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, TN, and the University of Tennessee College of Medicine, Memphis, TN. He continued his medical training at the University of Virginia and Yale University. John served honorably in the U.S. Navy as a lieutenant commander at the Naval Hospital Portsmouth in Virginia. He then embarked on a notable medical career, initially serving as a pathologist in leadership roles at Holston Valley Hospital Medical Center in Kingsport, TN, from 1974 to 1988. John was among the first instructors at the Quillen College of Medicine at East Tennessee State University, Johnson City, TN. He later continued his academic pursuits with teaching and research at the Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston, SC, where he retired as a tenured professor. Throughout his career, John authored numerous scientific publications in clinical chemistry and laboratory medicine.

Outside of his professional life, John was a man of many interests. He was an avid golfer and had a lifelong interest in science. He also enjoyed photography and reading books on a wide range of subjects. John took pride in his wardrobe and enjoyed being well-dressed.

John was brilliant and driven at work while being caring and good-natured with his family. He is remembered by friends and acquaintances as having a humble and kind nature. He was appreciated for the opportunities his support and encouragement provided for women in the field of science. All who knew him will cherish and remember John’s life and legacy.

Instead of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association (www.alz.org) in memory of John, honoring his compassionate spirit and commitment to advancing medical science.
